Job Overview

We are currently looking for a Nurse Manager - Occupational Health and Disability to join our HR team in Holland, MI.  As a Nurse Manager, you will:

Be responsible for management of full-integrated disability process, ensuring North American Operations’ compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and workers’ compensation requirements.  Serve as liaison between legal advisors, insurance providers, medical personnel, management, and members to ensure legal compliance and consistent record keeping.

Job Functions

Essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage Medical Center staff to provide skilled care and treatment to support organization’s needs.  Assure development of staff to meet challenges of changing workforce and organization.  Organizes work processes and operations to ensure acceptable service levels and cost-effective, measurable business results.
  • Analyze short-term disability and FMLA issues to provide or coordinate appropriate follow-up.  Advise management regarding employment status while evaluating legal liabilities.
  • Manage, integrate, and monitor disability issues including ADA compliance, FMLA administration, workers’ compensation, and legal issues governing disability leaves to ensure legal compliance and internal consistency through training and coaching of supervisors and Human Resources members.
  • Ensure accurate, up-to-date records are maintained to ensure compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) workers’ compensation regulations’ record keeping requirements, including OHSA log.
  • Ensure accurate, up-to-date disability records are maintained, including evidence of serious health condition, to provide confidential communication to members, physicians, and others with business “need to know.”
  • Assess and monitor short-term and long-term disability programs, including medical certification requirements, to recommend cost control improvements.
  • Review and interpret new laws governing leaves (i.e., medical, workers’ compensation, or military leave) to ensure Haworth’s documents and processes support new legislative requirements.
  • Provide counseling for and communication to members following serious health problems.  Promote utilization of appropriate professional service to support development of return to work plan.  May work with physicians, insurance carriers, and/or management concerning treatment or recovery plans.
  • Serve as liaison for workers’ compensation among in-house medical staff, North America Safety and Health Manager, third party claims administrator and/or insurance companies, and legal advisors on disputed claims, possible settlements, investigation procedures, and vocational rehabilitation.  May attend trials and pre-trials for workers’ compensation cases.
  • Support hiring process, as needed, to provide reasonable accommodation and ensure legal compliance.


Do you have these required qualifications?

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Human Resources, Business Administration, Psychology, or related field.
  • Registered Nurse (R.N.) License required.
  • Ten years experience in disability management.
  • Five years supervisory experience.

Do you have these preferred qualifications?

  • Case Management experience.

Ideally, you have also demonstrated the following:

  • Strong working knowledge of ADA, FMLA, workers’ compensation, and legal issues governing disability leaves.
  • Strong leadership, communication, analytical, organizational, administrative, and inter-personal skills required.
