Job Overview

 

We are currently looking for a Project Engineer at our headquarters in Holland, MI. The position will be filled based on experience either as a level 2 or a Senior Project Engineer

 

We are looking for a creative product engineer, who can develop new concepts, in 3D CAD, for new product ideas.   Individual will work closely with Industrial Design and Advanced Manufacturing team members in the early phases of development.  Main objective will be to collaboratively develop concepts that meet the needs of the business unit, focused on profit, functionality and product requirements.  Member will support costing exercises around selected concepts, focused on material, labor and overhead.  Investigates and analyzes competitive products, to provide insight into market positioning of new product concepts.   Provides technical expertise to fellow team members and interfaces at all organizational levels.  

Job Responsibilities

  • Support projects of strategic business units.
  • If needed, coordinate and lead Product Engineering team members responsible for either new products or Maintenance Of Business (MOB).  Responsible for distributing work load appropriately and aligning skill sets with responsibilities, ensuring all projects have owners with clear deliverables.
  • If needed, complete performance appraisals for all direct reports. Cascades Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Recordable, Timebound (SMART) goals annually for each team member to be tracked and documented on appraisals. Coaches and trains members to reach goals.
  • If needed, manage day-to-day operation of engineering activities as related to projects and support activities. Provides direction for team members to accomplish strategic department goals as set by Engineering Manager.
  • Reports periodically to Engineering Manager regarding engineering team performance, project schedules, budget, performance opportunity statement, and project gross margin to support efforts to control product performance, field problems, and product improvements.  Establishes standard metrics for cost, quality, and timing for each project; tracks performance to metrics on monthly basis.
  • Coordinates team member input to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget and products meet parameters of project opportunity statement. 
  • Works with project teams composed of members from various functions to support development of opportunity statement for New Product Introduction (NPI) projects.
  • Works closely with project teams during concept phase to ensure concepts selected can be designed and manufactured to meet product requirements and cost expectations (cost, quality, and timing).
  • Establishes and documents product requirements for new and existing products.  Trains team to use Design Verification Plan and Report (DVP&R) as method to record product expectations and document results.
  • Carefully follows changes to Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers’ Association (BIFMA) testing standards and communications changes to team; keeps all DVPs up-to-date.
  • Participates in presentation of product concepts, product functions, projected costs, proposed schedule, and resources required to complete assigned development project.
  • May work upstream in early ideation, and concept phases, and hand off concepts to NPI team.
     

Do you have these required qualifications?

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or similar)
  • 6 years related engineering experience
  • 2 years experience in product design
  • 2 years experience with product-line responsibilities
  • 2 years project engineering experience
  • Experience must show history of project management assignments with increasing magnitude.
  • Current and continuing right to work in the U.S. without sponsorship 
  • Ability to work in Holland, MI without relocation assistance 

Do you have these preferred qualifications?

  • Master's degree in Engineering
  • Previous experience with early phases of product development
  • Experience in the furniture, automotive, or consumer product industry
  • 15+ years of experience
